摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process and a device for cylindrically grinding a preform ingot for an optical fiber by which the preform ingot can be cylindrically ground with excellent dimensional accuracy. SOLUTION: In the method for cylindrically grinding the preform ingot obtained by depositing soot on the periphery of a starting core member, and then sintering/ vitrifying the soot so that the center axis of the preform ingot coincides with the core axis, before finish grinding, the moving quantity by rough grinding in the radial direction of the preform ingot is measured at least two points in the longitudinal direction of the preform ingot, and the finish grinding is carried out so that the core axis coincides with the center of the preform ingot based on the measured value. It is preferable that the position where the moving quantity by rough grinding is measured is set to a part immediately close to the outside of the grinding section of the preform ingot.
