PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound capable of emitting visible rays and having electrical conductivity, to provide a luminescent material comprising the compound, to provide an inexpensive electroluminescent device with its luminescent layer containing the compound, and to provide a display unit formed by arranging the electroluminescent devices on a substrate. SOLUTION: The compound is such one as to contain a single (substituted) 2,5-thiophenediyl group or a plurality thereof mutually bound in a chain manner, wherein a (substituted) 9-carbazolyl group is bound to at least one end of the above single group or at least one end of each of the plurality thereof.
