An assembly receives and processes water arising from exceptionally heavy rainfall. The assembly has a water diversion threshold incorporating a flow constriction of any geometric form, together with a water cleaning assembly e.g. rake, screen, sieve, brush, filter, or a combination of these. The number of constrictions is two or more. The constriction may form part of a pre-existing basin or a new basin. The constriction may be of variable geometry. The water cleaning assembly retains solids and suspended solids. Large volumes of water which do not pass through the construction may be subjected to a simple mechanical or other cleaning process.
