The invention relates to a method for regulating mammalian hair growth which is effected by regulating the differentiation and maturation of hair follicles and regulating the duration of active growth phase (anagen). The method of the invention comprises the step of modulating the levels, activity and/or expression of heparanase in cells of keratinocyte lineage and/or in cells of mesenchimal origin, so as to enhance or inhibit hair growth. The invention further provides for methods for the treatment of subjects suffering from primary or secondary alopecia and for compositions and uses of heparanase in the regulation of mammalian hair growth.
