PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable cam timing system (VCT) which can accurately determine the phase of an intake cam in a double cam shaft structure having two cams which are in a dependent relation. SOLUTION: The VCT system includes a series of crank gear signals generated from a first position sensor, a series of exhaust cam gear signals generated from a second position sensor, and a series of intake cam sensors. A formula of an intake phase angle relating to an exhaust cam phase of (phase)=(▵T/T*crank angle)-(Z phase) is given, wherein▵T is a time starting from the lowering edge of the exhaust cam gear signal to the lowering edge of a following intake cam gear signal.
