PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing an alkyl aryl carbonate by reacting a dialkyl carbonate with phenols. SOLUTION: A reactor is divided to two or more reaction zones having pressures heightened in the next step, and a liquid phase is passed through each of the reaction zones in order and discharged from the reaction zone at the final step. The vapor phase is moved in the counterflow direction of the liquid phase, and the resultant vapor phase is extracted from the most upstream reaction zone and fed to a distillation column. A by-produced alkyl alcohol is distilled off from the top of the distillation column, and a bottom liquid consisting essentially of the dialkyl carbonate is returned to the reactor. At least a part of the phenols of a reaction feedstock is fed to the reaction zone at the most upstream, and the dialkyl carbonate may be fed to any reaction zone. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
