PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forward/backward movement switching device for automatic transmission capable of improving the fuel consumption by reducing the torque loss and increasing the degree of freedom of design. SOLUTION: A reverse brake 43 is formed of a band brake to reduce the drag torque when the reverse brake 43 is released so as to reduce the torque loss for the improvement of the fuel consumption. Also, since a hydraulic chamber 97 is unnecessary to be provided along the axial directions of a rotary drum 90 and a brake band 91, the diameters of the rotary drum 90 and the brake band 91 can be reduced by axially extending the rotary drum and the brake band without lowering the connection torque of the reverse brake 43.
