PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air fuel ratio control system of an internal combustion engine capable of suitably keeping exhaust gas sanitizing performance for a catalyst by accurately estimating the amount of oxygen loading to the exhaust gas sanitizing catalyst. SOLUTION: The control system calculates the amount of oxygen loading Os of the catalyst on the basis of an air fuel ratio detected by a primary air fuel ratio sensor located at the upstream of the catalyst, increasingly compensating an oxygen desorption rate used for a calculation for the amount of oxygen loading when the air fuel ratio detected by a second air fuel sensor located at the downstream of the catalyst is determined not to be located near a theoretical air fuel ratio but to be rich in the case that the calculated value Os belongs to a suitable range, and increasingly compensating an oxygen adsorption rate used for the calculation for the amount of oxygen loading when the air fuel ratio is determined to be lean.
