A meter for the metering of a utility, the meter having data communication means for the wireless close proximity transmission of data relating to use of the utility between the meter and at least one other device in close proximity thereto. The invention extends to a communications control means for wireless close proximity transmission of data to and from the meter and to a data communication network comprising a communications control means and one, or more, meters. Further, the invention extends to a method for transmitting data to and from a meter.
