<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printed matter inspecting method and a printed matter inspecting apparatus that can continuously inspect the printed matter when reference image data are updated. <P>SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for inspecting the printed matter that is continuously conveyed, image data (D1) of the printed matter at a point of time during conveyance are acquired, and a first reference image data (S1) are created from the acquired image data (D1). Image data (D2) of the printed matter at another point of time during the conveyance are acquired, and second reference image data (S2) are created from the acquired image data (D2). The first reference image data (S1) can be replaced with the second one (S2). First, the printed matter during conveyance is inspected based on the first reference image data (S1).
