A first positioning step (S1) positions and fixes a condensing element and a polarization converting element. A light flux introducing step (S5) introduces light fluxes to the condensing element, the polarization converting element and a light flux splitting element. An optical image detecting step (S7) detects an optical image that has gone through these elements. An illumination area comparing step (S9) compares an illumination area by a detected optical image with a designed illumination area. An optimum status judging step (S10) judges whether or not the optical image illumination area is in an optimum position with respect to a designed illumination area based on the comparison result. A light flux splitting element position adjusting step (S11) adjusts the position of the light flux splitting element if judged to be not in an optimum position, and a second positioning step (S12) positions and fixes the light flux splitting element if judged to be in an optimum position.
