PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a facsimile communication apparatus by which a transmitting terminal can recognize the state of a receiving terminal and response is made rapid without capturing a line ineffectively to save a communication time. SOLUTION: This facsimile communication apparatus performs a procedure stipulated in ITU-T recommendations V.8 with the opposite equipment party to establish a picture transmission mode executable with the opposite equipment party on the basis of the procedure. The facsimile communication equipment has an ANSam transmitting means for transmitting an ANSam signal, a CM signal receiving means for receiving a CM signal, and a JM signal transmitting means for transmitting a JM signal. In the facsimile communication equipment, the receiving terminal has a control means for changing protocols after a V.8 protocol in accordance with the existence/absence of information to be transmitted.
