PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that leading data can not be correctly extracted when the transfer to an inertial mode exists in a next ECC block after the transfer to a direct detection mode at the breakpoint of an ECC block at the reproduction of a format wherein synchronizing signals are not continuous at a junction of the ECC blocks for each other. SOLUTION: When a 2nd special signal S2 is detected when a counted value of a sector counter becomes "m", the mode of a synchronizing signal detection means is shifted to the direct detection mode from the inertial mode. After that, the mode of the synchronizing signal detection means is shifted to the inertial mode from the direct detection mode when a 1st special signal S1 is detected. By this procedure, the mode of the synchronizing signal detection means is shifted to the direct detection mode from the inertial mode at the end part of the ECC block without inserting pseudo synchronizing signals by the specified number while keeping the inertial mode, thereby the stable operation is attained without causing an error in leading data of the succeeding ECC blocks.
