A medical instrument includes a handpiece (12), an electromechanical transducer (14) disposed in the handpiece (12) and an electrical circuit (10 0) disposed at least partially in the handpiece for supplying alternating electrical current of a predetermined frequency to the transducer (14). A probe is operatively connected to the transducer for transmitting vibrations generated by the transducer to an operative site in a patient. A switching device (98) is mounted to the handpiece and is operatively connected to the circuit (100) and the transducer (14) for enabling the supply of power to th e transducer (14) during a motion of the probe in a preselected direction relative to the handpiece (12) and for disabling the supply of power to the transducer (14) upon a termination of motion of the probe in the preselected direction.
