Photostabilizing a dibenzoylmethane UV filter comprises immobilizing it in a matrix formed by a sol-gel process from a silicon alkoxide, a nonionic surfactant and water without adding organic solvent. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of a material containing a dibenzoylmethane UV filter by mixing the UV filter with a nonionic surfactant, a silicon alkoxide and sufficient water to hydrolyze and condense the alkoxide, in the absence of organic solvent; (2) material produced as above; and (3) cosmetic or dermatological composition comprising the material.
