An internal combustion engine (3) includes an injector (4) that injects fuel into a cylinder. A plunger-type fuel pump (8) pumps the fuel to the injector (4) from a fuel tank (6). A control system (50) for the fuel pump (8) includes a unit (10) for determining an injection start timing of the injector (4), and a drive unit (10) for driving the fuel pump (8) for a second predetermined time that starts a first predetermined time earlier than the injection start timing.
