A composition for removal of metals from solution the composition including manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and phosphate. The composition may contain iron and manganese in the ratio of about 2 moles manganese to 1 mole iron and may contain phosphate in the amount 3 to 15% of the combined amount of manganese and iron. The composition may be coated onto a lightweight granular substrate such as perlite, plastic discs, polystyrene, glass fibre, charcoal or chitin. A coated substrate may be prepared by providing a substrate; wetting the substrate with a coating solution of manganese and iron salts containing phosphate and oxidising the solution to cause a coating comprising manganese and iron oxides, hydroxides and oxyhydroxides, and potassium to be precipitated onto the surface of the substrate. |
