A communications system comprises first and second units (11 and 1). The first unit 11 has a first transceiver 12 for telecommunication with a remote base station, and a second transceiver for communicating with the second unit over a short range Bluetooth (rtm) link. The second unit may contain a SIM card and may communicate with the base station, through the first unit using a standard that requires a sim card such as GSM. The first unit may be a handheld unit used to wirelessly read electricity meters supplied with secondary units. Alternatively, the first unit may be used as solar powered pay-phone unit. The secondary units may be used in a variety of applications including set-top TV boxes. |
