A device for checking motor vehicle braking lights comprises an elongate telescopic assembly for interposing between a brake pedal and a fixed point in the vehicle eg. steering wheel rim, door pillar, under-seat cross-member. A cushioned yoke 18 receives the rim, the device extended so that an enlarged rubber foot or boot 22 contacts the pedal when depressed, and a sleeve 12 is clamped to a strut 10 by a screw 14. In unillustrated embodiments, the device may be secured to the steering wheel and the pedal by jaws, and the two parts may lock together to also act as an anti-theft device; parts may be bent, shaped or hinged to go around obstructions; length adjustment is effected by rotating one part in screw threaded engagement with another part, and locking the thread with a lockable pin through openings; or a one-way jamming clutch may allow fitting of the device, with a release mechanism to allow removal of the device after testing. A braking light test method is also claimed.
