The lateral alignment of a document approaching a sensing station is investigated by a pair of photo-cells 15, 16, Fig. 3, which are normally aligned with control holes 23, 24 on the document, the difference in output in the photocells 15, 16 being derived from a potentiometer 40 and controlling a solenoid or servo-mechanism 19 to adjust the position of a conveyer section 21 relative to the sensing station. The document path also includes a first orientationsensing station comprising a pair of photo-cells (5, 6), Fig. 2a (not shown), aligned with control holes 13, 14, Fig. 26, which when simultaneously illuminated divert the document along a secondary path loop in which the document is rotated by 180 degrees. A second orientationsensing station C precedes the data-sensing station D. Between documents, AND gate 28 is enabled by photo-cells 26, 27 to inhibit gates 31, 32. If the orientation of a document at station C is such that photo-cells 25 and 26 are uncovered by holes 13, 14 a decoding circuit 35 is enabled via AND gate 29 and OR gate 34. If the document orientation is reversed, photo-cells 25, 27 are uncovered and " mirror image " decoding takes place. The output of decoder 35 may control sorting flaps.
