[Also in Division B1] A portable anaerobe jar 12 is closed by a cover 18 with a sealing ring 24, the cover being clamped to the jar 12 by a screw 28 passing through a strap 26 and abutting on a depression 33 in the cover 18. The ends 31 of the clamping strap 26 engage with a flange 14 on the jar 12. The strap 26 is made of a resilient material, such that the ends 31 will disengage from flange 14 if a certain gas pressure is reached inside the jar 12. In use, the jar 12 contains a gas-generating device G (Fig. 1), and the cover 18 has screwed into it a container 38 with a wire-mesh basket (46) holding a catalyst (C), Fig. 2, not shown. The container 38 may have a further mesh (48) designed both to prevent the catalyst C from falling into the jar 12 and also to provide a flame arrester in the event of auto-ignition. The jar may also contain an indicator assembly (50), Fig. 4 (not shown), to determine whether oxygen gas is present within the jar 12. In use, the jar 12 contains petri dishes P for the culture of anaerobic micro-organisms.
