FIELD: ultra-red optics; manufacture of monolithic specimens of polycrystalline zinc sulfide. SUBSTANCE: proposed method includes delivery of hydrogen sulfide and zinc vapors to backings heated to 600-700 C by argon flow and precipitation of zinc sulfide at total pressure in system of 0.013-0.13 atm, equimolar consumption of zinc and hydrogen sulfide of 0.15-0.17 l/h, argon, 1.8- 2.2 l/h followed by gas static treatment of material thus obtained at 940- 980 C and pressure of 890-2000 atm. Zinc sulfide produced according this method is characterized by Young s modulus of 93 HPA and magnitude of optical transmission of 67% at wave length of 0.5 mcm (for specimen at thickness of 3.5 mm), strength of 95 Mpa and microhardness of 2 Hpa.
