PURPOSE: An ink cartridge and a recording apparatus are provided to mount and remove the small and thin ink cartridge from the flat ink cartridge installation part of the compact recording apparatus accurately and conveniently. CONSTITUTION: An ink cartridge installation system comprises a partition wall(110), a recessed part(102) formed on a cartridge remaining base wall(32), a guide projection wall(120), a needle protection plate(130), a lock member of the needle protection plate, a lock release rib(150), a withdrawing lock projection part(160), and a remaining ink detecting optical sensor(170). An ink cartridge is installed in a recording apparatus, and a lever and the optical sensor are placed at both sides of a hollow needle(82) near the opening for mounting the ink cartridge. Two recesses are opened and formed in the front and lower parts of the ink cartridge, and a light shielding member is arranged in the recess corresponding to the optical sensor. One recess is guided by the projection wall, and the sensor is contained by the other recess to protrude the light shielding member into the optical sensor. The front of the ink cartridge is contacted to the lever, and the hollow needle is inserted to an ink supply hole of the ink cartridge by opening the hollow needle.
