PURPOSE: A method for operating a reciprocating internal combustion engine is provided to secure more effective operation of the reciprocating internal combustion engine in a load range below a pre-set rotation limit speed. CONSTITUTION: A method for operating a reciprocating internal combustion engine is composed of a cylinder(2) having a scavenging air opening formed in a scavenging slot(4) and an outlet valve(3); an air-compressing supercharger group(7) having a turbine(9) driven by exhaust gas from a combustion chamber(22) of the cylinder; and a piston(5) for reciprocating in the cylinder along a running surface(6) between a bottom dead center position(UT) and a top dead center(OT). The compressed air is supplied as scavenging air(12) through the scavenging slot to the combustion chamber of the cylinder. At least one cylinder of the internal combustion engine longitudinally scavenged is operated in at least one pre-set first rotation limit speed to a 4-stroke mode.
