PURPOSE: A card recognition system and method, and a digital set top box using the system are provided to make the digital set top box recognize a plurality of smart cards. CONSTITUTION: A card recognition system includes a card processor(230) and a central processing unit(220). The card processor detects whether or not a smart card(300) is inserted into a card slot and reads the inserted smart card. The card processor resets the smart card in response to a control signal applied to the card processor. The central processing unit consists of a resetting unit(221) and a card judgement unit(222). The resetting unit outputs a control signal for resetting the smart card when the card processor provides a signal representing that the smart card is inserted into the card slot to the resetting unit. The card judgement unit judges a conditional access system that is compatible with the smart card.
