PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk drive capable of keeping reliability over the long period in the magnetic disk drive having the load/unload mechanism by preventing the damage of a head element due to the damage such as the scratch on the disk surface, which has the possibility of generation at the loading/unloading operation, and preventing the trouble becoming unable to record or reproduce data. SOLUTION: Such a method for removing a protrusion of the magnetic disk is provided that the frequency to load/unload a magnetic head slider with respect to the magnetic disk is counted, the discrimination is made whether this frequency satisfies the prescribed condition, the magnetic head slider is passed on a load/unload area while making the slider to move from a data recording area to the direction of the load/unload area where the slider is loaded/unloaded with respect to the magnetic disk, and the protrusion caused by the damage including the scratch on the magnetic disk surface is treated, which has the possibility of generation when the magnetic head slider is loaded or unloaded.
