PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lightweight container spreader and a materials handling apparatus allowing right and left holding devices to be easily synchronized when driving for easily keeping a balance. SOLUTION: In this container spreader, one holding device 12a and the other holding device 12b are fitted to a body 11. These devices are formed so as to be moved close to and apart from each other on the longitudinal axis of the body 11, and have one holding parts 23 and the other holding part 24 at a distance in the longitudinal direction. A drive mechanism for moving these devices close to and apart from each other is installed in the body 11. The drive mechanism comprises a cable body 20 wound on a wheel 19 and adjusted to be moved in one direction and a revere direction and a drive source driving the cable body 20. One holding part 23 is fixed to the portion of the cable body 20 moving in one direction, and the other holding part 24 is fixed to the portion thereof moving in the other direction.
