PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect recording paper sheets on a feed tray even if the number of the paper sheets is small. SOLUTION: This feeder comprises a sensor for measuring a distance up to the upper surface of the bundle-like recording paper sheets P placed on the feed tray 22 and a sensor 12 for measuring a distance up to the lower surface of the bundle-like recording paper sheets P. These sensors 11 and 12 are fixed to an end face 21 through a fixed member 13 so as to keep constant a distance L therebetween. By using the distance L1 up to the upper surface of the recording paper sheets P measured by the sensor 11, the distance L2 up to the lower surface of the recording paper sheets P measured by the sensor 12, and the distance L therebetween, the loaded height H (thickness) of the bundle-like recording paper sheets P is calculated with an expression äL-(L1 + L2)}.
