[Also in Division B2] Electron diffraction gratings are made by scanning with an electron beam a dielectric medium forming part of a composite structure comprising (a) a transparent substrate 11, (b) a transparent electrically conducting layer 12, (c) a thin layer 16 of thermoplastic polymeric solid having a surface energy of at least 24 dynes/cm, and (d) a coating 17 of dielectric material which remains in the liquid state, said layer of thermoplastic polymeric solid being interposed between and in contact with both said coating of dielectric material and said transparent conducting coating, said transparent conducting coating in turn being in contact with and covering one major surface of said transparent substrate.
