<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch an authentication systems according to required conditions such as the performance of a bearer or a ticket gate and a required processing speed in authentication processing, when a ticket is purchased, transferred or used in an electronic ticket distribution system. <P>SOLUTION: Authentication using a public key cryptographic system is performed between an IC card 1 and a ticket server 2 when an electronic ticket is purchased because high security is required, and the confidential information of the ticket gate and the electronic ticket are also distributed together with the electronic ticket on a secure channel. In examining the electronic ticket, a communication interface between the IC card 1 and a ticket gate machine 6 decides whether the authentication processing of the public key cryptosystem is performed or authentication processing using a common key cryptographic system is performed. In the latter case, the authentication is performed by using secret information which is exchanged in advance.
