PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus by which the prolongation of the life of an intermediate transfer body, the miniaturization of an apparatus and the reduction of the cost are made compatible and the productivity of image forming is made high. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus provided with image carriers 10Y-10K, image forming means 1Y-1K, intermediate transfer devices 20 and 30, a final transfer body 40 coming into contact with the intermediate transfer device 30 at a final transfer position, a potential grade forming means, the intermediate transfer body 20 and cleaning means 21 and 31 to remove residual toner on the intermediate transfer device 30, the cleaning means 21 and 31 possess an upstream side cleaning roll 310 coming into contact with the intermediate transfer body 30, a downstream side cleaning roll 210 coming into contact with the intermediate transfer body on a downstream side in the returning direction of the residual toner from the final transfer position to a primary transfer position from the upstream side cleaning roll 310 and cleaning brushes 313 and 213 coming into contact with the intermediate transfer bodies 20 and 30 on the downstream side in the returning direction from the upstream side cleaning roll 310 and also on an upstream side in the returning direction from the downstream side cleaning roll 210.
