PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent voltage-transmittance characteristics of a chiral smectic liquid crystal from varying in continuously driving a liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal panel is divided into a first region D1 and a second region D2 as expressed in the figure. In the first region D1, in the case a first voltage (a picture display voltage of the region) of a negative polarity is applied, a bright display is effected and in the case a second voltage (a reset voltage of the region) of another polarity is applied, a dark display is effected. In the second region D2, in the case the second voltage (a picture display voltage of the region) is applied, a bright display is effected and in the case the first voltage (a reset voltage of the region) is applied, a dark display is effected. Furthermore, the reset voltages in the respective regions are corrected so that no direct current component is accumulated in the liquid crystal. Thereby no direct current component is accumulated in the liquid crystal panel and variation of the liquid crystal characteristics (i.e. voltage-transmittance characteristics of the chiral smectic liquid crystal) accompanying the accumulation is suppressed.
