PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save the power consumption of a display apparatus using a color EL panel which uses organic electroluminescence elements and is capable of color display as a back light source of the liquid crystal. SOLUTION: Drive circuits 29, 30 to apply a DC electric field between electrodes 17, 19 and drive circuits 31, 32 to apply a DC electric field between an electrode 24 and a reflecting electrode 25 are controlled by controlling signals from a controlling means 33. A mode indication means 34 connected to the controlling means 33 through signals can indicate one of the modes: a non-emitting mode not to allow a color EL panel 13 to emit light, an illumination mode to allow the color EL panel 13 to emit light as an illumination light source, and a color mode to display a color image on the color EL panel.
