PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an arc tube for a discharge lamp wherein, when an electrode assembly on a second pinch seal side is inserted into a glass tube, the electrode assembly can be inserted precisely smoothly into a predetermined position of the glass tube without sliding or contacting of the electrode assembly on a guide tube. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the arc tube comprises the steps of; inserting the electrode assembly in which a bending potion 8a is formed on a lead wire 8 into the glass tube, and sustaining it by itself on the predetermined position inside the glass tube; and pinch-sealing the assembly-inserted portion of the glass tube. The method further includes inserting the assembly into the metal guide tube 20 disposed coaxially with the glass tube and temporarily sustaining the assembly in the tube, and then inserting it to the predetermined position of the glass tube by thrusting it with a thin rod thrusting member. Longitudinal grooves 22 are so formed inside the guide tube 20 that the grooves engage with the bending portion 8a in the longitudinal direction and prevent the bending portion 8a from circumferentially turning.
