The device has a movable slide carriage for clamping the profiled rod (1,2) and a control unit (9) for monitoring welding and the conveyor force of the drive whereby the conveyor force is variable during welding. The conveyor force is adjusted by the control as a function of the position of the drive and/or as a function of the position of the profiled rod being welded in respect of the heating element and/or as a function of the position of the rod relative to another rod and/or a function of the welding time or machining time. The drive is a pneumatic cylinder (3) whose operating pressure is monitored and regulated for control.
