PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission of a vehicle having seven forward speeds or more and further fewer frictional engagement devices using a plurality of sets of planetary gears. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission 10 comprises a first planetary gear 18, a second planetary gear 20, and a third planetary gear 22, and a frictional engagement device formed of clutches C1 and C2 and brakes B1, B2, and B3. A first gear-change stage is established by engagement of B3 and B1, a second gear-change stage is established by engagement of B3 and B2, a third gear-change stage is established by engagement of C2 and B3, a fourth gear-change stage is established by engagement of C1 and B3, a fifth gear-change stage is established by engagement of C1 and C2, a sixth gear-change stage is established by engagement of C1 and B2, and a seventh gear-change stage is established by engagement of C1 and B1.
