A seal plate (7) is inserted into the main sewerage channel (1) to form a receiving space for a branch socket (2). A locking piece (8) is placed at the free end (4) of the branch socket. A tensioning device (9) pulls the seal plate and the locking piece together so that the inner wall of the main channel (1) and the free end of the branch socket abut in a fluid tight manner. A valve (22) is provided for letting fluid in or out of the test space formed between the locking piece and the seal plate. An indicator (23) is provided for indicating the pressure in the test space. The tensioning device may be electrically operated. An independent claim is included for a method of testing seal tightness.
