PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cover a recording area corresponding to a recording element having abnormality occurrence with recording elements of a plurality of other recording heads so as to reduce white stripes. SOLUTION: When the displacements of a recording position of a first head having abnormality occurrence with respect to recording positions of second, third heads used for complementing recording are in the same direction and in a predetermined range, a complementing recording operation is executed so as to cover the recording area corresponding to the recording element having abnormality occurrence by determining the recording element used for complementing recording of the second or third head as the recording element adjacent to the recording position of the recording element having abnormality occurrence.
