The measuring instrument has a rolling-up device (5) for rolling up a measuring tape (4). A fixing device (10) can be moved from a released position, in which the measuring tape is rolled up, to a locking position, in which the tape is fixed against the housing. A braking device controls the roll-up speed. The braking device (16) is attached to the fixing device.
