PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce workload and working hours for adjusting the distance between gripping devices and the distance between containers gripped by the devices. SOLUTION: The cargo handling machine 10 comprises a crane body, a trolley arranged for moving in the longitudinal axis direction of the crane body, and a container spreader 19 suspended from the trolley. The container spreader 19 comprises two gripping devices 21a, 21b capable of coming closer to and moving away from each other in the longitudinal axis direction of the container spreader 19. This machine is characterized by having a distance detecting means 23 for detecting the distance between gripping devices 21a, 21b and a storage means 26 for storing the distance between gripping devices 21a, 21b.
