PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stepping exercise machine which has smooth sliding contact between a rocking rod and a pedal portion, little impact for a smooth rise and fall motion, and easy operability. SOLUTION: Right and left operation rods 13 and the rocking rods 30 are connected through sliding contact mechanisms, respectively, a pedal plate 12 is stepped to move the operation rod 13 downward, a flat surface 33a of an upper sliding contact body 33 provided at the operation rod 13 turns and slides around a slide pin 32 while making sliding contact with a flat surface 34a of a lower sliding contact body 34 provided at the rocking rod 30 according to the rightward and leftward inclination of the rocking rod 30, while the lower sliding contact body 34 turns and slides around the rocking rod 30. The flat surfaces 33a and 34a are changed in a contact range between the flat surfaces 33a and 34a according to an angle between the operation rod 13 and the rocking rod 30, and surface contact between the flat surfaces 33a and 34a is always mutually maintained.
