1,146,516. Refining oils. NETHERLANDS REFINERY FOR PETROLEUM PRODUCTION. 24 Oct., 1967 [1 Nov., 1966], No. 49001/66. Heading C5E. A method of refining hydrocarbon stock comprises mixing water, which may if desired be at least in part complexed with boron trifluoride as boron trifluoride hydrate, with the hydrocarbon stock in liquid form to produce a dispersion containing at least 0À1% by weight of water, introducing into the said dispersion gaseous boron trifluoride in a quantity sufficient to provide a molar excess of boron trifluoride over water in the said dispersion whereby precipitation of undesirable constituents of the hydrocarbon stock is effected, and removing the precipitated material to provide a refined product. Up to 10% by weight of water may be used. The temperature may be from 0‹ to 90‹ C. and the pressure may be atmospheric or higher. Boron trifluoride may be recovered from the precipitate and recycled, the process being carried out continuously. The treated oil may be further treated with activated clay, extraction with sulphuric acid, or hydrogenation. The process is applicable to heavy gas oil, light spindle oil, vacuum distillate lubricating oil, transformer oil, electrical oil, or residual stocks. The precipitated material may be separated by gravity settling or by centrifugation.
|
