A gas-discharge head lamp for a motor vehicle is disclosed. The head lamp includes a hermetic glass enclosure, a first discharge unit disposed in the glass enclosure to generate a high beam, a second discharge unit disposed in the glass enclosure to generate a low beam, an insulation tube connected connection lead wires extended from the first and second ground electrodes of the first and second discharge units and connected to an external ground power, and a base joined to the glass enclosure to allow the head lamp to be held in an opening of a reflector. Each arc-vessel of the first and second discharge units exhibits a single color or two different colors. Thus, a conversion of a light beam between a high beam and a low beam is achieved by selectively supplying current to the first or second discharge unit, without a conventional electrical or mechanical converting unit. |
