The method involves determining actual coefficients of a shape function suitable for representing the shape of the band from detected values of the flatness deviation of the band (1), determining target coefficients from the determined actual coefficients and converting the target coefficients into position control parameters for straightening control. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a controller for controlling the position of a guide roller, (b) and a method of correcting flatness errors of a band moving in a band transport direction.
