PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element provided with an antireflection section consisting of minute rugged structures having excellent characteristics on its surface.

SOLUTION: The optical element is obtained by forming a molding surface of an inverted shape of the optical element to be desired on a mold, then forming a layer consisting of an etching speed gradient material on the molding surface, forming a multiplicity of minute recessed parts roughly densely on the molding surface by etching the gradient material layer through a mask, supplying raw materials for forming the optical element onto the molding surface, press molding the raw materials, and further curing the raw materials by UV rays etc.
