PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of improving dark contrast and a method for driving a display panel. SOLUTION: A unit light emitting area in the display panel is constructed by a 1st discharge cell and a 2nd discharge cell provided with a light absorbing layer, sustained discharge bearing light emission for controlling a display picture is generated by the 1st discharge cell and various control discharge followed by light emission which is not concerned with the display picture is generated by the 2nd discharge cell.
