PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for driving an optical recording element comprising an optical conductive layer composed of an OPC (organic photo conductor) and a liquid crystal forming a cholesteric phase combined with each other. SOLUTION: In the method for driving the optical recording element equipped with: an organic photoreceptor having a charge generating layer; a liquid crystal layer of which the main component is the liquid crystal forming the cholesteric phase; and a pair of first and second electrodes arranged with the organic photoreceptor and the liquid crystal layer sandwiched in between, a driving signal having a preparatory period, a recording period and an auxiliary period is supplied to the optical recording element. In the recording period, a rectangular pulse is supplied. In the preparatory and auxiliary periods, a pulse with a curved waveform with polarity opposite to that of the pulse in the recording period and with an absolute value of amplitude less than that of the pulse in the recording period is supplied.
