PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain the quality of a recorded image without elongating a recording time even when a recording element failed during the practice of multipass recording. SOLUTION: In a recording apparatus, a carriage loaded with at least one recording head having a plurality of recording elements is moved for scanning, and an image is recorded on a recording medium by the multipass recording. The recording data of each pass are produced from the mask data of each pass, and a defective recording element among the recording elements is detected by a non-discharge detection part 406. Recording data are changed and compensated so that data to be recorded by a defective recording element detected by a multipass data processing part 408 are recorded by another recording element for recording data on the same line in another pass.
