PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a postal matter sorting apparatus which can reliably sort postal matter released from a transportation basket while avoiding damages and erroneous collection of the postal matter, which is easy to be maintained well, and of which the postal matter sorting line can be laid out optionally at a high installation space efficiency. SOLUTION: In the postal matter sorting apparatus 100, an outward transporting line L1 and an inward transporting line L2 of the postal matter sorting line are adjacently arranged back to back each other, and a group of postal matter collection boxes are arranged along a region under the inward transporting line L2. The group of the postal matter collection boxes 120 comprise a box 121 installed in the lowest stage for collecting postal matter M from a transportation basket 10 on the outward transporting line L1 through a guiding and deflecting chute 131, a box 122 installed in the middle stage for collecting postal matter M from a transportation basket 10 on the outward transporting line L1 through a releasing chute 132, and a box 123 installed in the highest stage for collecting postal matter M from a transportation basket 10 on the inward transporting line L2 through a cushion chute 133.
