The invention relates to a method for controlling the preload device of a two-level belt. The inventive method consists in controlling the second level of the preload device of the belt according to a degree of gravity of a collision and a sitting position. Said degree of gravity of a collision is determined by a signal derived from an acceleration which is determined during a collision, the sitting position exerting an influence upon the signal evaluation.
